Diabetes
Every statistic confirms that the prevalence of diabetes is high among African-American populations, and that we are more likely to die from diabetes and its related complications than any other U.S. population. In Hennepin County, the prevalence of diabetes among African-Americans is more than double the prevalence among white Americans (displayed in the graph).
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Minnesota, and the death rate from the disease is rising. One in ten Minnesotans currently has diabetes, or is at risk for developing the disease.
Black men we must take heed: diabetes is preventable, yet it’s killing us. We must begin now to manage our health and eliminate the health risks that lead to diabetes, such as consuming high-fat, high caloric foods, the lack of exercise and living a high-stress lifestyle.
